Andrew Katz is an Irish lawyer and practises English law at Moorcrofts LLP, near London, where he is a Partner and head of Technology Law. He has been advising on free and open source software and other open technologies for over 25 years. He is a Visiting Scholar at the University of Skövde in Sweden, where he is part of a team from the Software Systems Research Group researching the intersection of open source and open standards. He is a co-author of “Open Source, Law, Policy and Practice” published by the Oxford University Press in 2022. He was a co-author of the 2021 European Commission Study om the Impact of Open Source Software and Hardware on Technological Independence, Competitiveness and Innovation in the EU Economy. He has a particular interest in Open Hardware and wrote the Solderpad Hardware License, as well as sitting on the core drafting team of the CERN Open Hardware Licence (the first and only open hardware licence to be recognised as an open source licence by the Open Source Initiative). He has written and spoken extensively on open source software and hardware internationally.
